Sister Abi Olsen was elected as the Student Government Association President for the 2019-2020 school year at Louisiana Tech. The Student Government Association is an organization known to most college students across the country. At Louisiana Tech, our SGA is most known for putting on Homecoming Week Events, Big Event, and giving away free scantrons on Wednesdays.
Abi states, “Throughout my time and experiences, SGA has shown to be so much more than what first meets the eye.”
Abi’s SGA journey started freshman year with the Tech Leadership Council. Then, sophomore year, she served as a member of the PR Department and junior year as a Junior Class Senator. Finally, for her senior year, the student body trusted her with the responsibility of serving as their Student Body President.
Throughout this year of serving as President, her role has been split into three main areas: improving the Tech Experience for Students, improving the communication between administration and the Student body, and representing Louisiana Tech on a state-wide level. Abi’s platform with this year’s SGA was to serve the whole student body intentionally. Abi has also taken part in trips and meetings that focus on the future of our institution in the state of Louisiana. The group of student body presidents across the state have also fought to make strides within the legislature to stop cuts to higher education.
Ultimately, this year of service has opened her eyes to the diversity of Tech in ways such as thinking about the college experience, and in all the different routes, roles, and areas students find themselves in along the way.
"I have loved getting to serve the student body and Louisiana Tech community."- Abi
